Every unit is defined by its size in square meters, and the converter multiplies by the ratio between the two. Imperial areas are the squares of the exact 1959 inch, foot and yard:

Examples
- Flats and houses. A 100 m² apartment is 1,076.4 ft²; a 1,500 ft² house is 139.35 m².
- Land. 1 hectare is 2.471 acres; 1 square mile is exactly 640 acres.
- Sports. A 105 × 68 m football pitch covers 7,140 m², or 1.76 acres.
Converting room sizes
If you know a room’s length and width in one unit, multiply them first and then convert the area: a 4 × 5 m room is 20 m², which is 215.3 ft². Converting each side first and then multiplying gives the same result, but rounding the sides can add small errors.
