How it works

  • Tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100
  • Total = bill + tip
  • Each person pays = total ÷ number of people

With rounding, the total (or each share) is raised to the next whole amount and the tip absorbs the difference. Amounts are shown to the cent without a currency symbol, so it works with any currency.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. A 15% tip on 80 is 80 × 15 ÷ 100 = 12, so the total is 92.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Traditionally on the amount before tax, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. Enter whichever amount you want the tip to be based on.

How does rounding up work?

Rounding the total raises it to the next whole amount. Rounding each share makes what each person pays a whole amount, which is handy when paying in cash. The extra goes to the tip, and the calculator shows the resulting percentage.

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country and the service. In the US 15–20% is common in restaurants; in many European countries rounding up or around 5–10% is usual, and in some places, like Japan, tipping is not expected.
